Day two of the 2012 convention of the AZ-CA District of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod began with the continuation of Pastor Jon Zabell's Keynote presentation on “The Sacramental Life.” Delegates were also given time to share their own thoughts on the blessings of Holy Communion in a Christian’s day-to-day living.
Pastor Ross Else, chairman of the District’s CrossWalk Ad Hoc Committee, presented its report and recommendation to receive CrossWalk Lutheran Church into membership with the district. Delegates joyfully observed the evangelical and brotherly attitude with which the committee’s work of evaluation and correction was carried out and also received by the leadership of CrossWalk. Convention delegates, following the recommendation of the Ad Hoc Committee, accepted CrossWalk as a member congregation of the AZ-CA District.
Pastor David Clark, 2nd Vice President of the District, shared more information on the work of the Synod’s Translation Evaluation Committee (TEC). Three Bible translations are currently being considered for recommendation for use by Northwestern Publishing House now that the 1984 version of the NIV is no longer in print. Last year’s Synod convention asked the 12 District conventions to vote on the Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB), the English Standard Version (ESV), and the New International Version 2011 (NIV2011). A fourth option was added to the ballot: deferring the vote until the 2013 Synod convention. These ballots will be collected from all the districts before they are tallied. Delegates also approved a recommendation to encourage the TEC and pastors of the Synod to continue a thorough evaluation of all the translations under consideration before making a final decision.
